How Golden Point Works in Padel: The Complete Guide

Golden point is the rule that makes padel unique. Learn how it works at 40-40, who chooses the side, and why it changed the sport forever.

Golden point - or "Punto de Oro" in Spanish - is the single most important rule that separates padel from tennis. If you've ever wondered why padel matches feel so intense at deuce, this is why.

What Is Golden Point?

When the score reaches 40-40 in a game, instead of playing advantage (like in tennis), the next point decides the game immediately. There's no "ad in" or "ad out" - just one sudden-death point.

This rule was introduced by the World Padel Tour to:

  • Speed up matches and reduce total playing time
  • Create dramatic, high-pressure moments
  • Make every deuce game decisive

Who Chooses the Side?

On golden point, the receiving team gets to choose which side of the court they want to receive on - the right (deuce) side or the left (ad) side. This is a strategic advantage for the returners.

Why does this matter? Players typically have a stronger side. The receiving team can choose to put their better returner in the optimal position, or force the server to serve to their weaker side.

Strategy on Golden Point

Because it's sudden death, golden point changes how teams play:

  • Servers play safer: Getting the first serve in becomes critical. A double fault on golden point gives away the game.
  • Returners play aggressive: Since they chose their preferred side, the receiving team often looks to attack early in the rally.
  • Lobs and patience: Some teams prefer to play safe, extend the rally, and wait for an error. The pressure is on both sides.
  • Net position: Winning the net is even more important on golden point. The team controlling the net usually controls the point.

Is Golden Point Always Used?

Golden point is the standard rule in:

  • World Padel Tour (WPT)
  • Premier Padel
  • Most national federations
  • Most amateur leagues and club play

Some recreational formats and local leagues still use advantage scoring (where you need two consecutive points after deuce). Both formats are valid, but golden point is by far the most common in competitive padel worldwide.

Golden Point vs Advantage: The Numbers

In advantage scoring, a single game at deuce can last 10+ points if teams keep trading advantages. With golden point, it's always settled in one point. Over the course of a match, this can save 15-30 minutes of playing time.

For viewers and tournament organizers, this means tighter scheduling and more exciting matches. For players, it means every point at 40-40 carries maximum weight.
